We've been at it fast and furiously since I picked John Robert up from school over a week ago! We laid our heads to rest only one night on our own pillows. The break started out at Grandma and Grandpa's. Alex had never traveled to middle Tennessee. In fact he'd only met a few of the many aunts, uncles and cousins he has. Several of the relatives met us for lunch and entertained Alex and John Robert. Alex had his first "sweet tea" from his cousin Brian. Cousin Taylor and John Robert were serenaded with birthday wishes and a big chocolate cake.
Next stop was Kiawah. John Robert had everything planned out. (John Robert inherited this gene from his Granddad, Charlie, who always plans and action packed "vacation", too). The day starts with a 3 mile bike ride. Then play at the park; then back on the bikes. Brack and John Robert started out on a tandem bike and Alex and I rode together with the child seat on the back of mine. Alex just sat there, sucking his thumb, as usual! John Robert graduated to his own bike when Brack left. Riding on the beach was much harder without dad's help. Alex started to like the beach even though he was not so sure about the cold ocean water the first day out. He started enjoying the big sand box and being able to run wide open. John Robert "accidentally" was knocked over by a wave. I think the ocean water was about 50 degrees! John Robert even fit in some tennis lessons.
John Robert and Alex decorated bird houses and made stepping stones at the nature center. John Robert even got to swim in the heated pool there. Thank goodness Alex fell asleep, so I HAD to hold him while he napped rather that swim. (You have to understand...then temp is only around 70 with a constant breeze) Too cold for me, although we are use to coming here in February wearing heavy coats, scarfs and toboggans! At least this trip we were in shirt sleeves most of the time.
We always ended the day with ice cream from the Marble Slab. John Robert though it was the Marble "lab", then the Marvelous Slab. When we explained what a slab was, he almost waved off the ice cream thinking it had a lot of rocks in it. Oh, the imagination of a 6 year old.
We have had a marvelous week! Glad spring break comes but once a year.
My vacation will begin next week when things are back to some type of normalcy!
